ANALYTICAL REPORT: “INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINE'S BIOECONOMIC POTENTIAL”

13.03.2024

We would like to share with you the results of the study “The Potential for Innovative Development of the Bioeconomy in Ukraine”,  which was conducted as part of the project “Building Ukraine's Bioeconomy,” implemented under the overall coordination of EU fellow, Ph.D. in Economics, and Chair of the NGO Sustainable Development Agency “SYNERGY” Viktoria Vostryakova, as part of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Facility program to support civil society leaders in Eastern Partnership countries, funded by the European Union.

The bioeconomy holds enormous potential for Ukraine, as it helps create new economic opportunities, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, stimulates innovation in agriculture, industry, and medicine, and promotes the development of renewable energy sources and the circular use of resources. In the context of “green” post-war reconstruction and European integration, the bioeconomic transformation is becoming a key development priority for Ukraine, as it will help create new jobs, improve the efficiency of natural resource use, and attract investment capital. Furthermore, the transition to a bioeconomy will facilitate the harmonization of legislation with European standards, ensuring Ukraine’s further integration into the European space and strengthening its position on the international stage.

The study examined the perception of the bioeconomy and its potential among experts in the fields of science, education, and innovation; business and industry; and governmental and non-governmental organizations. An analysis of the state of development of bioeconomic sectors in Ukraine was conducted, key sectors and opportunities for innovative growth were identified, and initial steps necessary for the development of the bioeconomy were proposed.

The findings of this study provide insight into how the development of the bioeconomy can help address environmental challenges, the risks and opportunities Ukraine faces along this path, and how the bioeconomy relates to other relevant concepts and policies in the context of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction and European integration prospects.
