“Green” energy for shelters and temporary settlements for internally displaced persons

On May 23, 2022, an introductory webinar titled “Green Energy for Shelters and Temporary Settlements for IDPs” was held. The webinar was organized as part of the Repower a Green Ukraine 2022 project, which is funded by the German government and implemented by the German cooperative WeChange in partnership with the Ukrainian NGOs “SYNERGY Sustainable Development Agency” and “EcoClub.”
While our primary goal in the Civil Society Cooperation 2021 project was to establish renewable energy cooperatives in Ukraine, today’s realities present us with new challenges, primarily related to the large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the energy crisis. Therefore, in agreement with and with the support of the German government, our project has been reoriented toward more urgent needs related to the development of sustainable models for providing IDPs with affordable and clean energy.

The project consists of several phases, including a study visit to Germany, a certified online course titled “Designing Photovoltaic Power Plants Using Professional Software,” and activities within Ukraine, provided the situation stabilizes.
At the meeting, the first two phases of the project were presented, along with the speakers and experts for the online course—representatives from civil society, academia, and the business community.
The webinar covered general issues, global case studies, and existing pilot projects, as well as software capabilities and potential technological solutions. The curriculum for the certified online course “Designing Photovoltaic Power Plants Using Professional Software,” which begins in July 2022, was presented.

In addition to the online course, the program for the ChangeLab2022 study visit to Germany was presented—a special program of the Ukrainian-German partnership in the field of green energy and eco-friendly housing. The main goal of the project is to build a sustainable and climate-safe future, independent of fossil fuels. We are seeking ways to collaborate on developing such projects in both countries. We will discuss energy cooperatives, solar, wind, and biomass power plants, as well as off-grid systems; visit some “green” sites in Berlin; and perhaps even build several prototypes of temporary housing for refugees, which could later be used for green tourism.
