Sustainable solutions for the green reconstruction of housing for internally displaced persons
The project was implemented by the NGO ‘SINERGIA Sustainable Development Agency’ (Vinnytsia) in partnership with the NGO Hromada (Kyiv) and Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin e.V. (Berlin) with financial support from the Nord-Süd-Brücken e.V. Foundation, funded by the Berlin Development Cooperation Agency and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Kyiv Office — Ukraine.
A number of activities were carried out as part of the project:
1. Online webinar
The participants had gained this theoretical knowledge during an online educational webinar held the previous day, 20 October 2023 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzTd9JoS2ds).
2. A practical workshop on installing and setting up a hybrid balcony solar system
In accordance with the programme of activities, a practical workshop on the installation and configuration of a hybrid balcony solar system was held on 28 October 2023 at the Kyiv Institute of Renewable Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Details...
3. A competition for the free transfer of five sets of hybrid balcony solar power systems.
The equipment kits used during the practical workshop were donated free of charge for social and educational purposes. Beneficiaries were selected on a competitive basis, and details of this were published on the website of the NGO ASR SYNERGY.
A total of 26 applications were submitted to the competition from various regions of Ukraine. The selection panel chose five applicants who had submitted the most well-founded proposals and whose social impact was relevant to the capabilities of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources. Memoranda of cooperation and the transfer of equipment free of charge have been signed with all the selected organisations.
The shortlist includes:
- The ‘Zhuravka’ pre-school educational establishment of the Shabivska Village Council, in the village of Brytivka, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi District, Odesa Region – to provide a backup power supply for the anti-radiation shelter and the local community’s centre of resilience.
- The Ichnia City Hospital, a municipal non-profit organisation under the Ichnia City Council in Chernihiv Oblast – to supply electricity to the palliative care unit treating seriously ill patients.
- Institute of Renewable Energy, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast – for educational and research purposes.
- The Mykolaiv Public Library, a municipal institution in the Sumy region – to develop the library as a socio-cultural youth centre for education and communication, and to promote ‘green technologies’ within the community.
- Compensatory Preschool No. 88 of the Lviv City Council, Lviv Region – as an additional source of funding for the maintenance of the compensatory preschool attended by internally displaced children.
Results:
- Five organisations have received a backup power supply to meet the social and educational needs of around 420 people (including 260 children).
The sustainability of the project will be ensured through further activities aimed at raising awareness of the installation of balcony-mounted solar power systems and providing information on the development of green energy communities in Ukraine. In particular, closer cooperation is planned with representatives of communities in the Kyiv region with a view to sharing the knowledge gained and laying the groundwork for practical implementation.
To date, memoranda have been signed with five communities and organisations selected as beneficiaries for the donation of hybrid solar power station kits, which were purchased for a practical workshop, with a view to further cooperation.
In addition, there are plans to involve internally displaced persons in the Kyiv region in future online events (seminars, workshops) to be organised by the NGO ASR ‘SYNERGY’.
